Most people think of custom guitars being thousand dollar hand made instruments, and a lot of them are, but there may be a better way to have a custom guitar in your possession. There are several cheap modifications that you can add to your guitar to make it completely unique and pretty close to the quality of a custom instrument. Maybe they wont be quite as good, but you will be spending as little as a third or a forth as much as a hand made instrument.
Guitar mods and guitar kits are the two best ways to get a custom guitar for the price of a regular one. Mods can enable you to make minor changes to your instrument that will pay off in a big way, where as guitar kits will allow you to fashion a guitar in your own vision, usually out of the pieces that come in a kit.
Lets look at some guitar modifications first. Some of the best pieces to replace are the ones that are made out of plastic. These parts are doing the most to damage the look and sound of your instrument. The plastic does not carry sound vibrations well and will color your tone in adverse ways. Obviously, these plastic pieces do not look so great either. If you are going to customize your guitar at all, its best to start with these parts.
Besides some of the quick mods you can do to improve your guitar, guitar kits can also allow you to build your own unique guitar for a decent price. Most of these kits come in a few different styles based on some of the popular guitar designs. However, you do not want to build your own guitar just to come up with a normal one. You should look for ways to modify these guitar kits so that you can build a truly custom instrument, not just build your own standard guitar.
Guitar kits and mods offer the best and cheapest way to have a custom guitar without paying thousands to a hand builder. Until you have that kind of money laying around, keep checking this site for information on how to make your own custom guitar.
