Fighting Traditionalism with Custom Guitars and Mods

One of the problems with electric guitars and many other instruments is that they get a very ingrained traditional look and resist change. While acoustic instruments are less changed and affected by advances in technology and understanding, the electric guitar is affected by nearly everything. There is a resisting to changes in form of guitars from the original shapes that may be hurting players and the quality of music. Thankfully, guitar kits, custom guitar makers, and guitar mods are helping to change this.

In an era where there are just a few different basic shapes for a guitar, some of the best guitars have been the ones that have sacrificed the normal look for the sake of more ergonomic features and styles. Guitars can now be made that better fit the human body and make playing more comfortable and economic. This is something that should be embraced, not held back. It is true that people will have to get used to the looks of some of these ergonomic custom guitars, but they will get over it, and some of them look quite nice anyway.

One of the most famous ergonomic models is the Klein, which sits on the body in a much more natural position. If all guitars were made with these principles in mind you would have much better instruments being produced. Instead, you have guitar makes sticking to the traditional shapes and sizes and not experimenting much at all.

Luckily some people are changing this. There are guitar kits that you can buy that can help you make your own guitar to however you want it to look. You can mix and match pieces from different types of guitars and make modifications to them to come up with something completely new. But even more so than guitar kits, custom guitar makers are changing the way we look at the instrument.

The small custom guitar shops are not as held by public demand and expectations as the big producers. People come to them that do not want the normal mass produced guitar, so the custom guitar makers are encouraged to experiment and make the best instrument possible regardless of look. Without these small guitar makers it is doubtful that many new designs would come out at all, but thanks to them we are starting to see some change.

One of the better large scale guitar makers to check out is the Parker Fly brand. They make instruments that are in very different forms than the regular models because they have identified where improvements can be made. Hopefully other large guitar companies will follow in their footsteps and start making modified guitar designs that produce better instruments.

There is also the option to do any amount of modding to your guitar to change it the way you want. Guitar mods are becoming easier to do as information on them increases and it becomes more commonplace. There are already plenty of shops and companies that make aftermarket guitar parts or help with guitar customizations that can help make guitar mods more of a reality.

The electric guitar is an instrument that should be open to change and innovation, as that is what brought it about. We need to let go of traditionalism and conservatism in guitar design and do whatever makes a better instrument because that will only lead to better music.
