Good Guitars to Modify

One of the most important questions for any type of guitar customization or modification is what type of guitar to start out with. If you are someone planning on modding the guitar you already have, this is obviously a moot point, but for those people trying the strategy of buying a cheap guitar and then upgrading it with guitar mods, this is essential.

There are a few key things to think about. The first is the body shape of the guitar that you plan to mod. Unless you are planning to get into some heavy duty and very involved customization, you are going to be stuck with the general body shape of the guitar you purchase. Most people are not going to be doing any major reconstruction of their instrument, so getting a comfortable and well-balanced guitar to start out with is critical.

Along with the shape of the body, you are going to want a guitar made out of the right kind of wood for you purposes. Think about what type of sounds you are going to want out of your guitar and then do some research into what types of wood can achieve them. Once you have this decided, look for a guitar that can match you needs as close as possible.

You don’t need to worry about things like the tone and volume knobs because those will be easy to replace later on with any material you would like. However, the body should match the type of wood you are looking for.

With certain guitars, you will be able to change the neck for something else, but this may not always be true. For set neck guitars it may be impossible for you to easily change the neck, so look for guitars with bolt on necks if you are planning on making a change.

Besides the main body of the guitar, there is really nothing else that you cannot modify with relative ease. You may need to get some assistance, but for many modifications, it is a pretty simple process of replacing the parts with new ones. So the general rule of guitar customization could be said to be find a good guitar body, and upgrade the rest of it.
