Weight Balance Guitar Mod

If you happen to have a guitar that is slightly out of balance, meaning its headstock and neck tend to fall towards the ground when holding the instrument, you may want to try this simple weight balancing mod.

There are two main ways that I have thought of doing this. The first is non-invasive and will not require any major construction work to be done on your instrument, which is always a good thing. In order to do it, your guitar needs to have its electronics panel located near the bottom corner of the body when the guitar is resting on your leg while playing.

What this enables you to do is open up the panel on the back, which should give you access to a space that is out of sight and with room for some small weights. By placing a few washers or other such weights on the side of this electronics compartment, you can add some weight to the guitar that will help balance out the falling headstock, by adding weight to the opposite end essentially.

You should put this weight on the farthest part from the headstock and either tape or glue it into place. Make sure that it is not interfering with the electronics of the guitar, and you might also want to check to see if it is creating interference with the audible signal just by being too close to the electronics.

This will only help if your guitar is just slightly out of balance, as a greater problem will require too much counter weight to balance out. With only a slight problem, you will not be adding too much to the overall weight of the guitar, so it should help the balance without making the guitar too much heavier.

The other way to do this is to drill into the guitar body from inside the electronics compartments and place weights into the hole you make. This can be done with some wood glue and some well shaped metal weights. This is obviously a more involved and permanent method, but it may help you solve bigger balance issues without making any outwardly appearing change. Make sure you know what you are doing before you attempt this, and get help if you need it.

Most guitars are not perfectly balanced, so this could be a helpful guitar mod for anyone who is happy with the rest of their instrument.
