If you are planning on customizing or modding a guitar in any major way, you will most likely come across the need to fill former screw holes. In many of these cases, you will have to fill them in a way that can handle new screws being placed at least partly into the filled in area. With this in mind, here is the best cheap and easy technique for filling in screw holes on a guitar.
For this method you will need some wood glue and some toothpicks. That’s it. After you have removed the screws in question, simply place a toothpick into the hole to see how far down it needs to go. Then break the toothpick (or saw it) down to the right size for the hole. Once you have the toothpick fitted nicely to the size of the hole, cover it with some wood glue and slide it into place.
After this dries, it should leave you with a relatively flat surface on the top of the guitar, and the hole should be solidly filled in. You can then use some sandpaper to sand down the top of the toothpick if needed.
With the procedure complete, you will have a new surface that can be freshly drilled or screwed into for any new modifications. This technique may come in handy if you have new pickup rings that don’t quite fit the screw holes of the old ones.
Although this should be a relatively easy job, the best thing to do is get parts that fit perfectly with your guitar from the beginning, whenever you can.
